Main street — Karl Johans gate stretches from East to West from East railway station to the Royal Palace. This is the most famous shopping street with many street vendors, artists, musicians, actors and, of course, tourists from all over the world.
Almost all houses in the street built in the 20-50-ies of the XIX century by the Royal architect H. D. F. Linstow, wanted to turn it into a "Norwegian Champs Elysees". Next to the University building is a Historical-ethnographic Museum and national gallery, which presents the largest collection of paintings by Norwegian artists, including works by Edvard Munch.
The building of the Royal Palace was built in the first half of the nineteenth century in the classical style. The Palace stands on a small hill surrounded by a Park, and before him is a statue of king Karl Johan XIV. Nearby is another interesting Museum is the Museum-apartment of Ibsen.
The Cathedral of St. Olav attracts visitors with its Baroque altars, stained glass Windows and unusual painting of the ceiling and arches. In front of the Cathedral on the Market square there is the monument of king Christian IV.
