The Aviary pavilion in Pavlovsk Park Photo: the Aviary Pavilion in Pavlovsk Park

One of the first architectural structures of the Palace of Pavlovsk Park district, created by the architect Charles Cameron, is the Pavilion of the Cage or Aviary, built in 1782. Before his trip to Europe Pavel Petrovich and Maria Feodorovna discussed with the Cameron project of the Pavilion and its future purpose. There is evidence that they are very worried about the fate of this building.

As a result Cameron was created one of the most beautiful pavilions, designed in classical style. Sleek decor and strict proportions made the Aviary amazing attractiveness. The Central hall of the Pavilion is a square, on the main facade is a portico, a drum with a dome and semicircular Windows complete it.

He was always full of light. The effect was amplified by arranged opposite to each glass doors and eight mirrors in moulded frames, transcending the space of the room and giving him additional coverage. The architect took a particular care of the issue of concentration in the Pavilion Enclosure of the greatest amount of light.

North colonnade, located closest to the Triple lime alley, was wrapped with a wire mesh, which in the days of illuminations decorated monograms owners of Pavlovsk. Vines from the outside and was full buzz the net. South colonnade was designed for entertaining. In this place, Maria Feodorovna organized "lunch and evening meals", chamber balls. In 1783, arrived from Italy purchased antiquities, some of them were placed in the Aviary.

In 1804-1806, the architect Andrey Nikiforovich Voronikhin built outhouse to the side housings. Here was placed forty-antique urns and two antique sarcophagus.

Maria Feodorovna was a passionate lover of flowers. She turned the Pavilion Aviary in the true realm of the goddess Flora. Here were treated to a Royal flower gardens and two greenhouses in which to grow exotic plants. All this beauty makes you forget about the harsh climate of St. Petersburg. The statue of Flora, made of marble was imported from Italy and installed in the Enclosure. She consecrated floral Kingdom.

Originally the Pavilion Aviary pleased graceful painting, is designed in an antique-Roman spirit. Under the guidance of architect Vincenzo Brenna worked on it artists I. Rudolph and I. Ivanov. Time and Northern climate has not spared the creation of CH.

When the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, the Pavilion was rebuilt. In 1862 instead of the greenhouses were built porches, and between them was dug pond. In the center of the pond there was a statue of Aphrodite Callipyge, on the other hand is the statue of Actaeon with a dead deer.

In 1940 the Aviary Pavilion was restored. During the great Patriotic war the Enclosure was damaged by bomb splinters. The statues in the pond were stolen by the Nazis.

In 1967-1968 under the guidance of architect Sofia Vladimirovna Popova-Ganic was carried out major restoration of the Enclosure. Was restored to the original appearance of the building.

Currently, the pond in front of the Pavilion is decorated with a sculpture of Venus Italica (Italian copy of the original sculptor Antonio Canova). It is made of marble.

Every year since 2001 in the Pavlovsk Aviary Pavilion hosts the international flower festival "Imperial bouquet". He is dedicated to the memory of the first mistress of the Palace of the Empress Maria Feodorovna. Aviary, as in former times, is transformed into the Kingdom of Flora.
