The temple of Friendship represents the first work by Cameron in Pavlovsk Park. When the architect was considering the plan of the Park, he's already got a location for this facility. The archive of the Pavlovsk Palace Museum contains the project of the Temple of Friendship. It presents a cut of 2 options, facade, plan, signed by Charles Cameron, and working drawings. Also managed to preserve and estimates for construction works, compiled by Gregory Elnikova (architect, worked with Cameron). In early June 1780 estimate approved, was soon promoted and bookmark pavilion.
The temple of Friendship has the appearance of an ancient temple-rotunda without Windows, with a solid outer wall, with 1st oak door, surrounded by a ring of 16 columns Greek Doric order.
The temple of Friendship was conceived by a young Grand-Ducal couple as a return gift to Catherine II for her gift of the earth. Her pavilion was dedicated. Above the entrance decided to write letters of gold: "Love, honor and devotion of the first owners of Pavlovsk dedicated this temple gave them this land". But was destined to interfere with politics. In the summer of 1780 was the laying of the temple. The ceremony was attended by the Austrian Emperor Joseph II. After a solemn event, after protestations of friendship was awkward to specify the name, who initially thought the dedication, even if it was the Empress. Therefore, over the entrance to the Temple of Friendship emblazoned inscription: "Love, respect and gratitude dedicated". And in the pavilion with the help of allegories and symbols can be understood, to whom it is dedicated. Before the war the inscription has disappeared. In the Museum you can see only one surviving letter "ü".
In 1782 commenced decoration. Control over led architect S. K. Mikhailov were made plaster works, painting of the building was made by painter I. Rudolph. Modeling in the form of a frieze with dolphins, sculpted roses, wreaths of vines was cast by master Bernasconi. Carved furniture: 16 banquettes, decorated with a frieze of olive wreaths and branches of Myrtle, with legs in the form of torches of love, fulfilled by the Carver-sculptor Charlemagne.
The temple of Friendship full of allegories and symbols. Exterior walls above are decorated with stucco 16 medallions with sculptures (models J. D. Raseta, the modeller Bernasconi). They – 4 recurring allegorical story: "Minerva-Victoria", "the Presentation of dedicatory letters to the heir", "Generosity" and "Justice".
In the niche opposite the entrance was a statue of the goddess of wisdom Minerva, made of marble, with facial features reminiscent of Empress Catherine II. The sculpture was the explanation, to whom was dedicated the Temple of Friendship. In 1792 it was replaced with a plaster statue of the Empress in the image of Cybele, Ceres (the work of J. D. Raseta).
The temple of Friendship has blank walls, no window. There was light coming through a circular glazed aperture located in the center of the dome. Fearing that there will be dark, Cameron of England issued a special magnifying glass. In the summer, the pavilion is always light. The walls of the pavilion-rotunda built of brick and plastered. At first they were light gray or even white. Later they were painted yellow.
Undoubtedly, the Temple of Friendship is one of the best architectural buildings of the ensemble Pavlovsk Park. Charles Cameron was chosen as the perfect location on the banks of the river Slavyanka. The pavilion can be seen from different view points: it is open whether partial or whole. From afar, it seems small and airy, near – monumental. It is no coincidence that the Park was built observation deck. Before the audience had a wonderful picture in which the main actor was the Temple of Friendship. The natural background of the pavilion became planted around the maples and oaks, weeping willows and spruce. In different seasons different color canopies perfect for enhancing the beauty of this architectural structure.
