The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church is Peterhof, belonging to the St. Petersburg diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.
In 1892, the head of the court clergy Protopresbyter John Anysim it was suggested construction of a new Church in Peterhof, because, despite the many temples in the city there was no Church that can accommodate a large number of parishioners. The petition reached the Emperor Alexander III personally determine the place near Tsaritsyn (Holguin) of the pond. In the spring of 1893 was approved the project of the temple, made N. In. Sultanov. A year later, began preparations for the construction of the Church, dug a pit, built temporary sheds and a house draftsman.
The Foundation of the Church was held in the summer of 1895. The was supervised by the architect V. A. Kosyakov. For 4 years was built the building, then 3 years went by plastering work, ventilation and heating. Last 2 years were executed painting of the Church and the iconostasis. Around the Cathedral was divided into square. At the same time appeared the building of a parochial school, power station and boiler house.
Ceremony of consecration of the Cathedral took place in June 1905. It was conducted by the Protopresbyter John anyhew in the presence of the Imperial family. The Church was attached to the court Department. The Cathedral was attributed in the market square stone chapel of the venerable Joseph the Hymnographer, built in 1868 by architect N. L. Benoit (demolished in 1957).
In 1938 the Church was abolished. During the war the Cathedral was seriously damaged. Its Northern part was destroyed, as it housed the Nazi spotter who watched the movement of Soviet ships. There have been attempts to shoot it down. In the postwar years in the temple was a warehouse of the packaging.
Since 1972 the Church was registered, and in 1974 – under state protection as a cultural and historical monument. At the same time for design works were installed scaffolding. Supervised the work of the architect-restorer E. P. Sevastyanov. By 1980, the Cathedral dome appeared, and by 1987 he completed all work on the restoration of the facades. The Cathedral was supposed to arrange a concert hall or Museum.
In 1989 the Cathedral was returned to the Church. Since 1990, was carried out restoration of the interior and iconostasis. In July 1994, the temple was consecrated by Patriarch Alexy II.
Peter and Paul Cathedral was built in the forms of Russian architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries. Accommodates 800 people. Externally, the building of the temple has the shape of a pyramid. Topped with 5 tented chapters. Its height is about 70 meters. The walls are lined with brick dark red and light yellow colors and glazed tiles and decorated with tiles and columns. The apse is decorated with blind the columnar arcature. On the facade there were icons of saints – patrons of the Imperial family.
The Cathedral is surrounded by a covered gallery, where there are special rooms for the consecration of eggs, Easter and Easter cakes. Each of the 4 inputs were planned canopy rack. On the side facades are stairs to the choir. To the main entrance adjoins the chapel, the steepled bell tower and 2 arcades.
Windows, made to illuminate the interior of the premises in tents, used nowadays in order to travel, as they have great views of St. Petersburg, Kronstadt, Babylon, etc.
Main majolica iconostasis was executed on a sample of the iconostasis of the Orthodox Greek Church of St. George in Venice. The iconostases of the aisles and chapels were made of Carrara white marble. The image icon on the bronze plaques were painted by V. P. Guryanov.
In the North-Eastern part of the Cathedral was a confessional; in the North-West "chapel for the dead". In the chapel of the Cathedral there were only 2 of burial: major-General D. F. TREPOV (1855-1906), over the grave which had a marble tombstone, and his wife S. S. Crepaway, who died in 1915. In the late 1930s, their graves were opened by the authorities, and the remains taken to an unknown destination (from the grave TREPOV withdrew the sword).
