The temple has a large weight in the Buddhist structure in Thailand, its full name is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan, abbreviated also called Wat Yai. Founded the temple was in 1357 during the reign of king Maha Thammaracha I States Sukhothai.

Many Thais and Buddhists of Southeast Asia believe that here is the most beautiful Buddha image “Phra Buddha Chinnarat” in a pose of victory over Mara. According to records, she was cast about 700 years ago during the reign of king Machacamarca Litchi Sukhothai dynasty. Multiple copies of this statue are in various churches of the country, including in Bangkok and Rayong.

The main entrance to viharn (main building in the temple complex) decorated with pearls, presented by the king Borommakot in 1756. For vikarna is prang (stupa in Khmer style, similar to corn on the cob), which is on the top of the spiral staircase contains relics of the Buddha Gautama.

On the territory of Wat Yai is a national Museum with a rich collection of art and architecture of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Are also celebrated various holidays and festivals, including the annual fair Phra Buddha Chinnarat Fair, which takes place every third day of the sixth lunar month. In the first weekend of October on the river near the temple you can observe traditional boat racing-dragon.
