The natural Park of San Rossore Massaciuccoli" stretches along the coast of the provinces of Pisa and Lucca in Tuscany, in the place where once there were only a shallow ponds and marshes. Over time, this area was filled with sediments brought by the rivers Serchio and the Arno and the Tyrrhenian sea. But it is also the work of human hands – it is man made canals and drained soil. Reclamation began in the reign of the Medici Dukes.
Geographical location and climatic conditions contributed to the formation on the territory of the Park's diverse ecosystems: here you can find a vast coastal zone is covered in forests with a predominance of deciduous and coniferous trees, wide sandy dunes and beaches, the best of which are considered Tirrenia and Marina di Vecchiano, as well as wetlands of international importance. The latter include the Massaciuccoli lake and marshes of San Rossore.
The diversity of landscapes – dunes, sandy beaches, forests, Mediterranean scrub, cultivated areas and the availability of water resources (wetlands, ravines, canals, swamps, lakes, rivers and ponds) are the main features of the Park of San Rossore. They determine the richness of the local flora and fauna.
The bird life of the extraordinarily numerous and diverse: it is home to both nesting birds and migratory rufous herons, wild ducks, marsh Harriers and other. Very much in the Park of deer and wild boar, as well as small mammals like foxes, porcupines, dormice, badgers and squirrels.
Flora of San Rossore includes rare species such as sundew (small plant-predator), Liana silk vine Greek, marsh Orchid, pink hibiscus and Florida fern. In the coastal zone and the zone of dunes meet the plants-the pioneers – sandy cornflowers and bundles of erianthus Ravenna.
Among traditional activities, developed in the Park, can be called agriculture, harvesting of pine nuts, cattle and sheep breeding. Visitors to the Park can witness the horse racing at the Hippodrome of San Rossore, also known as Prato degli Ascoli, is a very popular event. Part Park, part of the province of Pisa, is divided into three village – San Rossore in the heart, Coltano and the Tombolo in the South.
