If you were in Klatovy in 1260, would witness a large construction. By order of the Czech king Premysl Otakar II on the border with Bavaria was constructed security guard called Klatovy. Its inhabitants were required to patrol the border and raise the alarm in case of attack by the enemy. Near the town was the most important trade route.
The second informal name of the town – the "gateway to the Bohemian Forest". In the XVI century Klatovy was considered one of the richest Bohemian cities. It was patronized by many influential nobles. In 1636 Klatovy was chosen by the Jesuits, speech which could affect the minds of the locals who converted to Catholicism. Thus, in Klatovy pulled pilgrims who brought more money to the city.
Since the beginning of the nineteenth century Klatovy got another name – "the city of carnations". The climate was suitable for the cultivation of these flowers. They were grown for sale in the neighboring countries. Still in the city center you can see the first carnation grown in the city.
The main area of Klatovy is called the size of the World. It has a square shape and is the heart of the old town. In principle, it can be considered coeval with the city itself. Since ancient times, except for the area has been preserved fortifications: powerful stenay several towers. You can see them, because access to them is open.
Be sure to visit the Church of the Nativity of our lady, which adjoins the two towers: White and Black. In Black there is a room for torture. On the same square as its façade is another Church - the Church of the Immaculate Conception and St. Ignatius. For its construction the Jesuits, at that time masters of the city, invited Italian architects. Now the Church has Baroque features. In the vaults of the castle you can see the old graves.
