Monument 23 guardsmen installed in 1989. The monument is represented in the form of a group of soldiers opposing the enemy, and a stele with the names of the dead, from the top of which in the sky fly bronze cranes. The author of the monument - sculptor A. I. Penkov.
The monument was erected in honor of the immortal exploits 23 guardsmen 158 regiment, the 51st guards rifle division. A small group of soldiers led guard Lieutenant A. M. Grigoriev their lives were held not only exploded in the city of Polotsk bridge. The Germans tried fourteen times to dislodge fighters from their retained position. The heroes managed to destroy only a flame thrower squall hit.
For a long time it was believed that all 23 fighters were killed in the battle for the bridge over the Northern Dvina, however, one of them was lucky – he received a severe wound, but it was picked up and rescued by nurses. It was Sergeant Mikhail Kozhevnikov. It burned jet flamethrower, but then filled up with earth, which flew into the air after being hit near the foreman of an enemy shell. The orderly-Sergeant S. D. Alferov, risking his own life, dug up the wounded from under the ground – he was still alive. Wounded hero managed to smuggle in a medical battalion and then to the hospital in the rear. Mikhail Kozhevnikov after the second birth in a terrible slaughter in Polotsk has found its place in a peaceful post-war rebuilding of the country. He worked in construction, in the Stavropol region chauffeur, at the factory.
This monument is worth seeing, if you are going to Polotsk. Not only to pay tribute to those who paid with their lives for the freedom of the whole country, but also to admire the amazingly energetic and dynamic, piercingly sad song.
