The monument to the heroes of the Patriotic war of 1812 in Polotsk is one of several monuments, established by order of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I in the areas of the most important battles of the Napoleonic wars.
200 years ago, 18-20 October 1812 in Polotsk important battle took place, during which Russian troops under the command Wittgenstein had defeated the French troops under the command of Marshal Saint-Cyr.
In 1834, a competition was announced for the best project of the monument to the battle of 1812. The competition was won by St. Petersburg architect Antonio Adamini. The monument is the chapel looked like a truncated octagonal pyramid, crowned by the typical Orthodox churches with a dome-bulb with gold plated Orthodox cross. The middle part of the pyramid was surrounded by eight columns with the Russian double-headed eagles.
Cast at the Lugansk plant, the monument was installed on Cabinet Polotsk area under the guidance of architect Vixena. The opening of the monument took place on 26 August 1850.
After the revolution in 1932, the monument to the heroes of the Patriotic war of 1812 was destroyed and sent to the smelter to the obtained metal to cast the monument to the leader of the world proletariat.
On the 200th anniversary of the Patriotic war of 1812 it was decided to restore all the monuments-the chapel, about which an agreement was signed between Belarus and Russia.
In Polotsk the restored monument was unveiled on may 21, 2010. At the opening ceremony was attended by many distinguished guests from political and religious figures, a brass band played the Belarusian Ministry of defence, played the clubs of the reconstruction, showing the scene of the famous battle in Polotsk.
