"Field of Poltava battle" - the state historical and cultural reserve, the largest cultural, scientific and methodological center dedicated to the battle of Poltava, as well as the history of countries that took part in the Northern war.
One of the first stationary Poltava museums - the Museum of Poltava battle history - was opened in June 1909 in honor of the 200th anniversary of the battle thanks to the initiative of an outstanding local historian I. Pavlovsky. In 1981, the Museum and memorial complex, are associated with the battle of Poltava, entered the State historical and cultural reserve "Field of Poltava battle", which area is 771, 5 hectares On the territory there are 4 ancient settlements and more than 30 burial mounds of Scythian times. In addition to the battle of Poltava took place on the field the battle of Poltava Colonel M. Pushkar Hetman's troops I. Vyhovsky, and in 1399 - Lithuanian Duke Vytautas the hordes of Tatar khans Temir-Kutlu and Adygea.
In the modern halls of the Museum there are unique exhibits of the late seventeenth century and during the Northern war (1700-1721): medals, engravings, portraits of Ukrainian hetmans, a collection of firearms and bladed weapons, maps, rare books, personal belongings of the Tsar Peter the great and other historical exhibits during the war. In the largest Museum hall is a magnificent diorama, which depicts the last moments of the battle of Poltava.
Part of the reserve "Field of Poltava battle" includes the following monuments: St. Sampson's Church (1856-1907), ten granite obelisks in the place of the redoubts (1939), the monument to Peter I (1915), the Museum of Poltava battle history (1909), the common grave of Russian soldiers (1894), a monument of Glory (1811), a monument to the resting place of Peter the great (1849), a monument to the Cossacks (1994) and other monuments.
"Field of Poltava battle" is the only historical-cultural reserve of Ukraine, included into the International Association of military-historical museums in the world, operating under the auspices of UNESCO.
