The Jesuit College is located on the corner of Rua do Comercio, in the centre of portimão. This majestic building was built at the request of a nobleman Diego Gonçalves in XVII-XVIII centuries. Inside the Church there is a marble tomb Diego Goncalves. It is worth noting that this Church is the largest in the Algarve.
The first stone was laid in October 1660, and the opening of the College took place in March 1707. The facade is divided into three parts. Average, highest part, which is higher than the others, serves as the entrance to the Church. The entrance is adorned with an arched pediment. When the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, the Church was damaged, but were soon carried out reconstruction work. Front door right side of the facade is designed in the Manueline style (XVI century). Inside the Church has a single nave. The main altar and side altar images made of wood and elaborately decorated with gold. Inside the Church many icons. You should pay attention to a sculpture of the virgin Mary with the Child - the product of the Renaissance of the sixteenth century, and other works of art of the XVII - XVIII centuries, such as Nossa Senhora da Piedade (our lady of Mercy) and Senor DOS Aflitos (Jesus Christ Grieving). Just inside the visitors can see the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which dates back to the XVII century.
In the lateral extensions of the College in our time there are such organizations as the administrative management of the city of portimão, center for the elderly and local organization of the boy scouts. There is also a Museum of fine art Diego Gonçalves, a visit which will not leave anyone indifferent.
