The Church of Joachim and Anna Photo: the Church of Joachim and Anna

The Church of Joachim and Anna is on the old Uspenskaya street, near fifth fortress walls of the city of Pskov. Even in ancient times there existed a girl Yakimanskaya monastery, which was known from the 14th century. The main Church of the monastery had a dedication to the parents of the virgin Mary - Anne and Joachim. At the moment the Church is given into the hands of the Seminary.

The exact time of the founding of the Church of Joachim and Anna unknown, but judging by the architectural component, and an unprecedented decay, to which the Church came to the moment of its last restoration carried out during 1896-1897, it has quite a significant number of years. Chronicles mention the Church only once, when in 1544 it was a sudden fire.

In the Church there are three semicircular altar of the apse, the eaves of which are beautifully decorated with triangles and squares. In extremely simple but colorful decor, you notice one peculiarity, which does not affect other local churches: the bricks that make up the composition of the figure, slightly flattened to the outer ends of the ribs, resulting in a triangular hollows are connected in the form of a cone in the depth and in the outer side expanding. This effect gives an unusual charm to the overall pattern, which looks so light and airy.

In the South side is a chapel consecrated in the name of the Holy prophet Nahum, and on the North side there is an Annex, having chancel. The West side is adjacent to the porch that connects with the side parts, namely North Annex and South chapel. The porch has a small porch, which to the last repair was absolutely typical Pskov porch, situated on a low and thick pillars. Today, much to the chagrin, patio side passages laid down and turned into walls, because of what, the old look of the building is distorted and lost. Two-span belfry stands on the wall of the porch. In the Church there is a stone drum, with narrow Windows and an unusual decors decoration. On top of him put a deaf small drum having a head in the form of bulbs with curly cross.

The cover of the porch is decorated with a single arch, and the main temple has a torispherical vaults below the arches. Supporting pillars, three in number, made a semicircular and its two pillars on the Eastern side are rounding only from the side of the altar. Using a wide span of made the connection narthex and the main Church. The passage acquired its present appearance during the period 1896-1897 years, and before that time there existed a sufficiently narrow pass. It was at this same time was stretched out the earth for 1 yard, and the floor is slightly lowered, which formed a fairly high Solea. In addition, the Church Windows were greatly expanded, and until that time, they looked just crack-like. From the West there is a choir, and in the right aisle, instead of the arch, is mounted an ordinary ceiling. In the South aisle there are two deep niches with Duszniki. Annex building, located on the left side, now is a hut.

After the revolution had passed, the Church of Joachim and Anna was closed. Global restoration work was carried out in the Church in 1949, when it was put in place previously being an ancient drum, the head also bought their original appearance, laid side wall of the porch is completely cleared, hipped covering was replaced with original – vosmiletnie.

Not so long ago in the temple was repaired, which in the interior revealed the exceptional beauty of the clean white-washed walls and all structures. The only thing that is regrettable is the bright spot of modern religious art, which is completely tasteless contrasts with the majestic ancient walls.
