Cathedral of the Transfiguration is part of the Pskov Transfiguration Mirozhsky monastery. It was built out of bricks (wide, flat bricks) and stone up to 1156. The temple is a cross – domed, has a rare type of architecture for ancient art. The main volume of the building is made in the form of an equal-armed cross (its Eastern line is semi-circular, because the ends of the altar apse), to which is attached at the corners low compartments: 2 rectangular waves from the West side and 2 small apse to the East. The conclusion from this is: originally the Church had pronounced outside shape of the cross. The interior main cross-shaped space was connected with a corner only small passages. Although the initial construction over the Western angles have been added to the add-ins. After a time, the Church was rebuilt, and his form has lost its original vision.
The Cathedral is frescoed from top to bottom in the 1130's and 1140-ies unknown Greek masters. Most likely, the murals program was offered by Archbishop Niphon of Novgorod (the founder of the monastery). The frescoes of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral is unique. Their originality consists in a deliberate iconographic system, high artistic quality, and, in addition, almost the whole set of paintings are preserved. The stylistic character they have no chronological analogues in our country and are reminiscent of Byzantine mosaics in some Sicilian churches of the XII century.
Subject combinations in God the Son the divine and human nature is Central in the composition of the temple. The disclosure of this theme are subordinated to all of the leading moments of the Church's decorations. The peak in the Deesis composition is represented in the conch of the altar and the huge dome of the Ascension. The contents of the vaults and lunettes of the Cathedral defines the subject of the atoning sacrifice. Among this mass of frescoes are especially attracted attention on the Northern wall of the "Lamentation of Christ". The third register from the top reflects the miracles of Christ. Two registers of the murals in the Central volume from the bottom, dedicated to the Holy prophets, warriors, priests, monks and so on. Inscriptions in Greek is rare, so most of the images are not identified. But were determined warriors Bacchus and Sergius, healers Cyrus and John Panteleimon, rarely depicted martyrs of Evdokia and Romulus, Persian saints Aiphalus, Capsim and Joseph, venerable Euphrosynus and Nikon and others.
In the XVII century frescoes of the Cathedral were Zabelina (most likely due to a fire in the XV or XVI centuries), and it's a happy way they were saved. In the late nineteenth century, in 1893, through the efforts and work of an archaeologist and art historian V. V. Suslov and his disciples they were opened from under the plaster. Some parts of the frescoes were lost, some colorful layers worn, which does not suit monastery clergy. For this reason, the decree of the Synod, Suslov was removed from restoration work, and to "restore" the frescoes were hired Vladimir icon painters under the leadership of N. M. Safonov. In 1900-1901, the master was washed with ancient paintings, and then rewrote them "in ancient style", keeping only the old narrative iconography.
In 1927-1929 started a new revelation of the frescoes, which lasts up to the present time: about half the area of the unique frescoes of the craft is under renovations 1901.
Now the Cathedral of the Transfiguration is a Museum, serving in it are not kept, only the feast day of the Transfiguration of the Lord, in agreement with the Department of culture, worship is held monastic brethren.
