The Church Of The Annunciation Photo: Church Of The Annunciation

The beautiful Greek island of Rhodes is famous for its history and plenty of interesting attractions. Every year, it attracts huge number of tourists from all over the world.

One of the main attractions of Rhodes town is the Church of the Annunciation, located in the homonymous capital of the island. Magnificent Orthodox Cathedral is in the immediate vicinity of the city's harbour and built in the Gothic style. The Church was built in 1925 during the reign of the island Italians (however, many buildings in the city belong to this period). Architectural prototype of this structure was the Church of St. John, which was located in the Old town near the Palace of the Grand Masters and was built in the 14th century by the knights in honor of his patron Saint John. Unfortunately, in the 19th century the once magnificent temple was destroyed and to this day preserved only ruins.

Despite the somewhat ascetic appearance outside of the Church interior and trim is a stunning. The walls of the Church is decorated with beautiful frescoes by the famous Greek painter Fotis Kontoglou.

Today the Church of the Annunciation of the blessed virgin Mary is the Cathedral of Rhodes. Gorgeous architecture in the Gothic revival style and amazing atmosphere of the temple attracts huge number of visitors. Near the Cathedral are magnificent architectural buildings like the national theatre, the town Hall, the Governor's residence, the post office and the mosque of Murat Flight, are definitely worth a visit.
