The Museum of decorative arts is one of the most interesting attractions of the Greek island of Rhodes. It is located in the historical part of the island's capital on the area of Argyrokastro next to the art Gallery of Rhodes (Municipal art gallery).
The Museum of decorative arts was opened to the public in 1966. The room in which the exposition of the Museum is a three-nave vaulted hall. During the reign of Rhodes of the knights Hospitallers here was the Armoury.
The exhibits presented in the Museum were collected mainly by the Italians during their reign in Rhodes (1912-1945) and perfectly illustrate the culture and life of the inhabitants of the Islands of the Dodecanese in the Ottoman period. A large part of the Museum's collection dates back to the 17th – early 20th century.
In the Museum you can see old furniture and household utensils, various articles made of ceramic and metal, woodcuts, a few musical instruments, jewelry and more. A special pride of the Museum is a magnificent collection of traditional men's and women's clothing, which was collected from all Islands of the Dodecanese. Also of considerable interest and painted wall plates from Lindos.
A small but very interesting Museum of decorative arts is the ideal place to explore the culture and traditions of Rhodes. Exhibits here are of high artistic and historical value. The Museum is very popular and every year it is visited by huge number of tourists from all over the world.
