Rhodes island is considered the "pearl" of the Mediterranean. Its magnificent natural landscapes, the climate, the abundance of historical and cultural sites annually attract large numbers of tourists from all over the world.
One of the main attractions of the island is considered the Rhodes Archaeological Museum. It is located in the historical part of the city of Rhodes (the capital of the island). The Museum is located in the medieval building of the hospital of the knights of St. John, which is recognized as an important architectural and historical monument of Rhodes. The construction of the hospital began in 1440 by Grand Master Jean de Eraser with funds bequeathed by his predecessor. The construction completed only in 1489 by Grand Master Pierre d Aubusson. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the island was dominated by the Italians, was a large-scale restoration of this magnificent medieval buildings. The Museum building is used since 1940.
The exposition of the Museum offers the visitors a variety of artifacts found during archaeological excavations in Rhodes and the neighbouring Islands. The collection includes a variety of ceramic products (including gorgeous antique vases and amphorae), sculptures, figurines, household utensils, ornaments, burial artifacts, coins, precious mosaics and much more. One of the most valuable exhibits of the Museum is a marble head of the God Helios (2nd century BC.e.). Also of particular interest are two magnificent sculpture of Aphrodite (the 4th and 1st century BC.e.), the statue of Zeus, gravestones knightly era with beautiful bas-reliefs and famous masterpiece of classical antiquity on a grave stele of Krito and Temerity (about 420-410 year to n.e.). Huge courtyard of the Museum surrounded by two-story arched galleries. At the Western colonnade is Hellenistic funerary stele in the form of a lion with a bull's head between the front legs, at the foot of which is a fragment of the magnificent mosaics of the Christian basilicas from the island of Karpathos.
