The Palace Klessheim Photo: The Palace Klessheim

The Klessheim Palace is located four kilometers West from the centre of Salzburg, surrounded by a large Park and a Creek. In addition, in the historic Park of the Summer Palace has a Golf course. Klessheim is the former residence of the archbishops of Salzburg, and is currently the only year-round casino.

Originally this place was a small manor, which was purchased by Prince-Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun in 1690. Architect Johann Bernhard Fischen turned it into a beautiful Palace, but after the death of the Archbishop in 1709, his successor stopped all construction work in favor of the Mirabell castle. I finished decorating the Palace of count Leopold von Firmian Anton, who also worked with the Leopoldskron castle. The count has expanded the terrace of the auditorium leading to the gardens. In the late 18th century on the territory of the Palace was a beautiful picturesque English Park during the reign of Archbishop Hieronymus von most. In the period of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the castle was in 1866 in the possession of the Archduke Ludwig Victor, younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

After the Austrian Anschluss in 1938, Adolf Hitler used Klessheim for conferences and official meetings. In particular, in the castle visited Benito Mussolini, Horthy Miklos, ion Antonescu, Josef Tiso. During the visit Horthy at Klessheim, Hitler on March 19, 1944 secretly ordered to occupy Hungary and deport Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz.

Until October 1944, the Palace remained beyond the reach of allied bombers. In may 1945 he was captured by the American military administration.

After the war the Palace was restored and transferred to Salzburg. During the cold war, neutral Austrian government used it for conferences and accommodation of foreign guests, among whom was the President of the USA Richard Nixon.

Since 1993, the Palace housed the casino.
