Abbey Michelbeuern Benedictine monastery located in Dorfmeier 30 kilometres North of Salzburg.

The Holy place there was the monastic cell in 736, as they say in the monastic register. After the Hungarian war, in 977, after the donation of the Emperor Otto II began construction of the monastery. The consecration took place on 18th July the year 1072, and the first known Abbot of the monastery was Weigand (1072-1100 gg.). The crisis period for the monastery was the fire that occurred in 1364.

From the 17th century Abbey Michelbeuern began a period of prosperity that resulted in an ambitious construction works. In particular, it was built as a Baroque altar in 1691 under the direction of architect Johann Michael Rottmayr. This period was the flourishing of education and the study of natural Sciences. More than 25 monks from the Abbey taught at the University of Salzburg. The Abbey also took over many of the pastoral duties in the surrounding parishes. From 1641, the monastery became a member of the congregation of Salzburg. Under the leadership of Abbot Anton Moser was restored library, and in 1771 in the hall were painted by Franz Nicolay.

During the national socialist period, schools and churches were closed and the monks were expelled. To return to the Abbey the monks were able only after the Second world war, and the Abbey Church was re-consecrated in 1950.

Today the monastery is a thriving community of Benedictine monks, known as the educational and cultural center. The monks work in the school, the Abbey has a different business: farm, factory heating, equity in the brewery. The current Abbot is Johannes Perkmann, who was elected in 2006.
