Eisriesenwelt - limestone ice cave located near Werfen, about 40 km from Salzburg. The cave is located in the Tennengebirge mountain, this is the biggest ice cave in the world. Its length of 42 km, the cave annually visited by about 200 thousand tourists.
The first official opening of the Eisriesenwelt was made by a natural scientist from Salzburg by Anton Posselt in 1879. He studied only the first 200 meters of the cave to him about the cave was known to local residents, who believed that it was the entrance to hell. In 1880 the Posselt published its findings in a magazine about rock climbing, but the report was quickly forgotten.
Alexander von Merck, caver from Salzburg, was one of the few people who remembered the opening of Posselt. He conducted several expeditions into the cave, since 1912. Von Merck was killed in the First world war in 1914, and the urn with his ashes stored in the cave. In 1920 were built cabins for researchers and established the first routes. Tourists began to arrive, attracted by the sudden popularity of the cave.
In 1955, was built the cable car, which allowed to reduce the 90-minute trek up to 3 minutes.
The cave is open for visits during the summer period from 1 may to 26 October of each year. The tour lasts a little over an hour, tourists are advised to bring warm clothes and comfortable shoes. Lanterns are issued at the entrance.
