The building of the Clock tower is one of the oldest in Sapporo, also it is recognized as a symbol of the city. In addition, the Clock tower (or Tokei Dai) is the only one in Sapporo preserved building, built in Western style. Visit the tower and a small Museum located in it, is a route many excursions in Sapporo.

The development of Hokkaido began in the Meiji period, from 1868. A year later, Sapporo became the administrative center of the territory. In the early 70-ies of the XIX century, the Japanese government asked the U.S. to provide assistance in the development of the island. Among the priority sectors, which were supposed to develop on the island, was listed and agriculture. Therefore, in the framework of this assistance in Sapporo arrived American William Clark, who established an agricultural College. The tower, built in 1878, was one of the buildings in the College campus, namely gym. The clock on the tower were installed in the summer of 1881, they were made in Boston and brought to Japan. College students not only studied English and agricultural disciplines, but some of them were converted to Christianity. Subsequently, the agricultural College was converted in Hokkaido University.

On the ground floor of the tower is an exhibition telling about the history of the College and the development of the city. On the second floor there is a hall in which concerts or rent it for private events. Also on the second floor you can learn about the principle of the movement. Watches that have lived here for over 130 years, and now correctly show the exact time and chimes still perform melodic motif.

In 1970, the Clock tower was given the status of an important cultural property, and in 2009 she was certified as an engineering heritage of Japan.
