Side was once one of the main ports of Pamphylia. It was founded by Greek colonists from Eality in the VII century BC. Later in side was ruled by the Persians, Lycians, the Seleucid Empire, the rulers of Pergamum and Rome, and Alexander the Great. In II-III centuries B. C. the city grew rich on the slave trade, especially beautiful girls. This period is considered a stage of prosperity side. The most interesting and beautiful monuments were created in side, when the city was under the rule of the Roman Empire. To this day I feel the power of the Roman era and the greatness of its rulers.

Side starts high city gates, which were erected in the year 71 BC in deference to the Emperor Vespasian and his son and heir Titus. Vespasian led the city for over seventy years, 9 po ad. His portrait of the Emperor is kept in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.

The height of the arched gate exceeds six meters, they are considered the city's main gate. Over the years the appearance of the gate strongly changed and now they already look different, but the walls remained still. Their appearance is quite interesting and original, however, at the present time to evaluate it very difficult – the gate was quite badly damaged. Despite its dilapidated condition gates continues to amaze visitors with its grandeur and uniqueness.

The main gates of the city are located between the two towers. On either side of the gate, the walls are niches with arches, in which previously were located statues of notable people and the Emperor. If you go in the gate, you can see the huge ancient square and enjoy the view of beautiful fountain "Nymphaeum".

Arched gate is located in the Northern part of the city and lead in its historical part. The road from the gate is the main street of the old town.
