Skopelos island is considered one of the most beautiful Greek Islands. Its picturesque cliffs and mountains covered with pine forests, olive groves, beautiful beaches and cozy coves attract to the island a huge number of tourists from all over the world. Famous Skopelos and an abundance of beautiful churches, monasteries and chapels, which on such a small island there are over three hundred.

One of the most famous and interesting temples of the island of Skopelos is the Monastery of Evagelistria. It is located about 3-4 km East from the capital of the island on a hillside in a wonderfully picturesque place. The monastery of Evagelistria is one of the most significant monuments of the post-Byzantine period on the island.

The monastery of Evagelistria was built in the early 18th century by the monks of Holy mount Athos on the foundations of an ancient Byzantine Church. In the second half of the 18th century with the financial support of a local noble family Daponte in the temple restoration work. Externally, the monastery looks more like a fortress, the massive walls of which were supposed to protect the Holy abode from possible attacks and intruders. The dome of the monastery's Catholicon decorated with gold leaf, made by masters from Istanbul. To the present time preserved the beautiful carved iconostasis of the 18th century and the magnificent Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, which are of high artistic and historical value (some of the icons date from the 14th century).

Today the monastery is home to only a few nuns. They produce interesting handmade goods, among which are especially impressive woven tapestries. All products can be bought in a small Church bookstore.
