The island of Skopelos is one of the greenest and most picturesque Islands of the archipelago of the Northern Sporades. The monastery of the Transfiguration (Preobrazhensky monastery) is one of the most beautiful and oldest temples of Skopelos. It is located near the homonymous capital of the island in a wonderfully picturesque location on a hillside. The monastery was built in the 16-17 th centuries and belongs to the Monastery of Xenophon on mount Athos. The painting of the Church was engaged in a famous Cretan hagiographer Antonio Mr. agorastos.
The main Catholicon of the monastery is made in the traditional Athonite architecture. To the present day in the Church, there are beautiful wooden iconostasis of the 16th century and unique ancient icons. Here also the Holy relics, antique Church vestments and rare books. Near the temple there are small structures where the cells of the monks, guest rooms, kitchen and other utility rooms. In the Eastern part of the monastery is the tower, which was once used as an Observatory and as the main refuge of the monks when attacked by pirates. Gorgeous slender cypresses surround the Holy abode.
Every Sunday and public holidays in the monastery of the divine Liturgy. But with special solemnity the inhabitants of Skopelos is celebrated here on August 6 is one of the main Christian holidays - the Transfiguration of the Lord.
