Bismarck tower is one of the 250 towers-monuments, built in the late nineteenth – early twentieth centuries in honor of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Similar towers were built in Europe, Australia, Africa and America. Up to the present time preserved 175 towers, including the tower in the Polish city of Szczecin in the North-West of the country. This tower is considered the most expensive of all other towers. Currently the building is open to the public.

The construction of the tower began in 1899, but because of territorial issues was delayed for several years. In 1910 the Governor von Eisenhart announced the beginning of an architectural competition to design the tower. The winner was William Crase, whose project was inspired by the Mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna (Italy) and the tomb of Cecilia metella. The first stone of the future of the tower was laid in honor of the celebration of the centenary of the battle of Leipzig in 1913. The opening ceremony of the Bismarck tower was held on 10 August 1921. The total cost of construction 25-meter tower amounted to 200,000 German marks.

In 2001 an agreement was signed for the lease of the tower Irena and Adam Zalusky that were supposed to restore the tower and create a tourist center. Work, however, has not been launched, and in 2008 the city administration has filed a lawsuit for the purpose of removing the tower's tenants.

The tower is situated on top of a small hill surrounded by forest in the industrial area 6 km from the city centre. The building needs restoration.
