The Odeon is a small theatre in Taormina, built of unbaked brick in the era of Ancient Rome by order of Emperor Caesar Augustus Octavian. Only in the 19th century, its ruins were discovered by archaeologists and restored today, this ancient monument is one of the main tourist attractions of the city.
There is no doubt as to the origin of the Odeon is the word, by the way, literally means "little theatre". It was built by the Romans, when Taormina became a military colony of the Empire in the 3rd century BC For its size it is considerably inferior to another structure of antiquity – the ancient Greek theatre, but his very presence in the city talks about how important culture was to the locals.
The ruins of the Odeon can be seen just behind the hill, named in honor of St. Catherine of Alexandria from Egypt, close to the medieval Palazzo Corvaja. They were accidentally discovered in July 1892, and until the moment of their existence was not even suspected! The story finds very unusual: blacksmith named Antonio Bambara cultivated his own plot of land located behind the Church of St. Catherine, when his pickaxe hit the design of red brick. A year later this place began the real archaeological site and the Odeon, seriously damaged in some parts, was removed to light after several centuries of oblivion.
The architecture of the Roman theatre is almost identical to the architecture of the other theatre of Taormina is an ancient Greek. Last facing South, while Odeon is looking to the northeast. As mentioned above, the theatre is built of brick interspersed with limestone. Its layout follows the layout of the other Roman theatres: the building is divided into three main sections – the stage, the auditorium and cavey. The scene consists of a stylobate – the top step, which rely on a base of columns, and colonnades of the ancient Greek temple (according to some historians, dedicated to Aphrodite). In addition to theatrical performances in the small Odeon, standing right in the middle of the policy was a musical show, and there were rulers, important officials, army officers and Ministers of religious cults.
