National Park Cradle mountain – lake Saint Clair is located in the Central Highlands of Tasmania 165 km Northwest of Hobart. In the Park there are many Hiking trails, and it is from here that the famous route of the Overland Track. The main attractions of the Park are mountain Cradle mountain and the bluff barn bluff to the North, mount Pelion East, mount Pelion West, Oakley mountain and Ossa mountain in the centre and lake St. Claire in the South. Since 1982, the Park is part of UNESCO world Heritage site "wildlife of Tasmania.
The Park is extremely rich in species-endemic – 40-55% Alpine flora of the Park are found nowhere else in the world. Among the animals of the Park – Wallaby, spotted marten, Tasmanian devils, echidnas, wombats, opossums and other Australian species. Here registered 11 of the 12 endemic species of birds.
The first European to visit the Park in 1910, was Gustav Weindorfer. He bought the plot of land and in 1912 built a small Chalet for guests, which is called Waldheim, which means "forest house". Unfortunately, the Chalet has not reached our days – it was burnt down during the fire. But in 1976 here in the valley the Cradle valley, built an exact copy of Waldheim, which today attracts many tourists. By the way, Gustav Weindorfer and his wife Kate actively advocated making this area a protected status.
