One of the main attractions of the capital of Kefalonia Argostoli is a very interesting Archaeological Museum. It is located near the city's Central square.

In the exposition of the Museum displays artifacts found during archaeological excavations on the island of Kefalonia, from prehistoric times to the Roman era. The Museum also has an excellent collection of Mycenaean finds. The building in which the Museum is located today, was built in 1960 by the famous Greek architect of Patroclos Karantinos. The old Museum was destroyed in 1953 during a strong earthquake. In the Archaeological Museum has three exhibition galleries.

In the collection of the archaeological Museum there are multiple ceramic and bronze ware, sculptures and figurines, jewelry, household utensils, coins, weapons, and various funerary artifacts, and more. Among the most important exhibits of the Museum is to provide a great Mycenaean amphora in the form of a conical bowl decorated with hatched triangles and jewelry from twisted gold spiral. These relics were found at the Mycenaean cemetery Lakkithra and date back to the 12th century up to n.e. Also a special place in the exhibit are large painted vase with two handles and a bronze fibula from the cemetery Diakata (both specimens belong to the 12th century up to n.e.). Interesting and artifacts such as bronze head statues of the Roman period, the fragments of the mosaic floor of the temple of Poseidon (2nd century B..e.), tombstones (3rd century B..e.), a unique collection of ancient coins and archival photographs from the excavations in 1899 in Yourself.

In April 2010 after an extensive restoration Archaeological Museum reopened its doors to visitors. Today it is one of the best museums of the Ionian Islands.
