Argostoli is the largest city and the capital of Kefalonia (one of the Ionian Islands). The resort of Argostoli is the main port of Kefalonia and situated in a picturesque Bay.

Argostoli has been the capital of the island in 1757 after the population of the old capital of Agios Georgios (also known as Kastro) has moved from a mountainous area in a well protected natural harbour. It gave the opportunity for residents to establish strong trade ties and lead the city to prosperity and economic growth. Argostoli has become one of the most important strategic ports of Greece. A cozy town with many magnificent Venetian buildings substantially damaged during a strong earthquake in 1953. Argostoli was rebuilt, but unfortunately, most of the beautiful architectural structures was not restored.

Important historical monument of Argostoli is the Drapano bridge, erected in the period of British rule in 1813 by the Swiss engineer Charles de boss. The original structure was made of wood, but in 1842 the bridge was completely rebuilt from stone. About halfway along the bridge in the water on the stone pedestal of the obelisk, which, since its base was a plaque with the inscription "to the glory of the British Empire! ". But in 1865, a year after the end of British rule, the sign mysteriously disappeared. The obelisk still is an important symbol of the island.

In Argostoli is interesting to visit the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of history and folklore, located in the basement of the City library. In the vicinity of the city is one of the most beautiful caves of Greece with spectacular melissani underground lake and Drogarati cave with rare beauty of stalactites and stalagmites. Important local attraction are the ruins of the Venetian castle of St. George (formerly the administrative center of the island) 7 km from Argostoli.

Today a modern and cosmopolitan argostólion is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches and comfortable hotels.

Certainly worth a stroll through a very beautiful promenade, paved with colored pebbles and decorated with palm trees. The Central square of the city - Plateia Vallianou - has the shape of a square, the perimeter of which there are a number of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars. This area is a favorite place for walking and recreation for locals and visitors alike. Pedestrian street, Lithostrotos – the main shopping street of the city with excellent shopping is also popular among tourists. On the square Salami is the clock tower, from the top platform which you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the city and its environs.
