Mount Alcona Photo: Mount Alcona

Mountain Alkon, also known as Halcon, is the highest peak of the island of Mindoro, and the third highest in the Philippines. The height of the mountain – 2,586 meters above sea level. Many fans of mountain climbing consider Alcona one of the most difficult to conquer the peaks, since it is famous for its narrow and sharp as a knife ridges. Currently has a five-year ban on any industrial activity on the territory of the mountain and its surroundings is necessary to ensure that the flora and fauna recovered from the recent fires, and from the actions of unscrupulous tourists.

The best time to conquer the Alcona – April, August and September. Usually start climbing from the town of Bako. The road to the top is quite steep, and along the way made several stops. If you wish to climb to the top can stretch for several days, stopping overnight at one of the specially designated areas. The first camp is set up at a height of 1080 meters. It is located in the depths of a dense forest, and near a Creek that serves as a source of drinking water.

Mount Alcona extremely important for biodiversity conservation in the province of Oriental Mindoro. Its slopes are covered with the largest by area in the vicinity of Puerto Galera mountain forest. Here are some rare and vulnerable species of animals and plants, as well as endemic species of birds, i.e. those that are not found outside of Mindoro. Among them minorsky fruit dove, minorsky owl and the purple svetasos that live at the very top of Alcona.

A large part of the mountain is very difficult for humans, and is therefore preserved the primeval forest. However, illegal logging is much "thinning" the forest, growing below 850 meters. In addition, residents of neighboring villages gathered on the slopes Alcona cane, osier and rattan, significantly tip the balance of existing ecosystems. And the area is exposed to erosion due to frequent these places landslides.
