The small town of Hlinsko was founded on the banks of the swift river Chrudimka at the foot of two mountain systems in the XI century. These places were rich deposits of clay, so the first inhabitants and founders of the town were the potters, who in honour of the material, giving them the means to live, and named the city.
Still in Hlinsko you can see the old craftsmen's workshops. They are collected in a kind of open air Museum, which is located on the right Bank of the river and is called Bethlehem. Wooden houses, painted in bright colors, looks quite unusual for a modern city.
For the first time in written sources about Hlinsko mentioned in the XIV century. It was then that the town has acquired a Prince of the line of Richburg. Hlinsko several times changed its owners. These include the Bishop of Arnošt of Pardubice, gentlemen Kinsky and others.
In 1834 the rule of the aristocrats in the territory of the Hlinsko comes to an end, and the town gets free. In the twentieth century it is not just a provincial Czech town – one of thousands, and industrial center of the region.
Tourists will not regret visiting Hlinsko. This town is almost rebuilt, so to this day preserved ancient buildings, such as the castle, built in the XIV century. Dates back to the eighteenth century the Church of the Nativity of the virgin, which was erected on the site of a wooden Church 1350. Town hall located on the Central square, built in the Baroque style. It is a lush, eye-catching building, dominating the area.
Art gallery Hlinsko is proud of its large collection of sculptures by renowned local artist Karel Lidicky. Here you can also see a collection of historical costumes and paintings by artists born in the Pardubice region.
