One of the main symbols of Feodosia – a monument of architecture and history of the Genoese fortress. Local residents familiar fortress, and for visiting Crimea tourists this ancient citadel is mandatory in the excursion program.

In the architecture of Feodosia almost no Greek influences, as during the invasion of the tribe of the Huns ancient Theodosius was destroyed. On the ruins of this settlement appears in the 13-14 centuries the city, which was called Kafa. In a Cafe two centuries was ruled by the Genoese, most of the buildings built by Italian type, so for Kafa even a nickname – Second Genoa.

Ruins of ancient Feodosia belonged to Oran Timur, the Tartar Khan. Merchants from Genoa bought the land in 1226 and began to build the citadel. In a fairly short time Cafe became a place of intersection of the economic, trade routes from Europe and Asia. Cafe was known for its markets of slaves, the slaves were brought here and the Italians, and in more recent times – the subjects of the Ottoman Empire.

Italian architects of the Renaissance have left in a city filled with temples and palaces. There were more than a hundred mosques and churches, was built about twenty thousand houses, built a system of wells.


The construction of the citadel began in 1340, on the slopes of the hill. The hill, which had the name of the Quarantine was for enemies first, as a natural barrier. The main material in the construction of the limestone, which was mined here, near or surrounding the castle in the mountains, or raised from the seabed. The perimeter length of fortress is 718 meters, the walls rise to a height of 11 m, width up to 2 m. In the ancient fortress took place two lines of defense: external, outer part and the citadel.

Most of structures in the nineteenth century, was dismantled. The Crisco tower and the Tower of St. Clement – some of the things that came to our days. Also, tourists can see the pylons of the gate, the fragment of the Western wall, Dock, Round tower and the tower of Constantine. Also preserved Turkish bath, a bridge and a number of churches.
