The Film Museum is one of the most interesting and popular attractions of the Greek city of Thessaloniki. The Museum operates under the guidance of the Ministry of culture of Greece and is an independent part of the International film festival in Thessaloniki.
The Museum is located in a former harbour warehouse, at the end of the old seafront, close to Aristotelous square. The building was built in 1910 by the architect Eli Modiano in typical industrial buildings of the late 19th – early 20th-century style and is recognized as an important historical monument. Its area is 1100 sq. m.
The Cinema Museum of Thessaloniki was founded in 1995 and in 1997 opened its doors to visitors. This year was very significant for Thessaloniki, as it was in 1997, the city was elected Cultural capital of Europe. The creation of the Museum mainly became possible after the acquisition of an impressive private collection of renowned local filmmaker Nikos Bilalis.
In the Museum exposition, cameras, projectors, part of the old cinema equipment, lenses, film, special machines for subtitles, photographs, posters and promotional materials, collection of soundtracks (all films released before 1995), and more. Impressive and impressive film archive, where you can learn the history of Greek films since 1985, including information on film festivals, public screenings in Greek theaters, the biographical data of famous Directors and actors, etc. will soon be available as an archive illustrating the history of Greek cinema from 1926 to 1985.
In accordance with the Charter of the activities of the cinema Museum is to collect, study, storage and display of cinematic relics of Greece. The administration of the Museum organizes educational and research programs. The Museum provides both group and individual tours, with the possibility of viewing films in a specially equipped room.
