By the end of the 18th century Cathedral of the Transfiguration, which by this time stood for over four hundred years, came in a state of disrepair, needed urgent restoration work. In 1780, by an Imperial decree of Catherine II to build a new temple in the name of the Governor Sievers was allocated to 7 thousand rubles, but these funds in 1782 were aimed at the erection of the Church of Boris and Gleb monastery.
In 1810 merchants from Torzhok asked the Governor of Tver, Prince of Oldenburg, to apply for government allocation of new funds for the construction of the temple. In 1815, the old Cathedral was demolished and in its place was built a new temple. When cleaning the excavation for the building was found a secret passage, leading from the Cathedral to the river Tvertsa, which was lined vaults.
The author of the project of the new Transfiguration Cathedral is still unknown. Estimates for construction amounted to apprentice architect Ivan Maxev. Claimed his Carl Rossi, chief architect at the Governor of Tver. Interested in local history does not exclude the possibility that the project has developed himself a prominent architect. The Cathedral was built between 1815 and 1822, the plan is a square, it is crowned with five domes. Each side of the building is decorated with a classic portico.
Beside the Saviour's Transfiguration Cathedral entry into Jerusalem is the Church, which was erected in 1842 on the project of Lviv I. F. This is a single-domed winter Church, which, by its appearance echoes of the Transfiguration Cathedral. Her vaults were decorated with paintings made on wet plaster with water based paints. The interior of the temple, including the objects of worship were acquired with funds of the brothers James, Stepan and Mikhail Uvarov, St. merchants.
