Ulcinj is located on the Adriatic coast, the geographical position at the time, ordered the city to build a reliable fortification structure. The fortress in the Old town rises above sea level by 60 meters, its history dates back about 2500 years. The fortress has been preserved the traces of various ancient civilizations that once were relevant to these areas – the Greeks, Romans, Turks, Serbs.

Also there is a legend that before Ulcinjska the fortress belonged to the pirates, who captured Miguel de Cervantes, Creator of don Quixote. The writer spent 5 years in captivity, and one of the local girls inspired Cervantes to create the legendary image of Dulcinea, which, in turn, inspired the literary exploits of the hero of the novel don Quixote.
