The Museum of the Danube Swabians area of 1500 square meters was created for five years and was inaugurated in 2000. Ulm, standing on the banks of the Danube at its very source, in the early 18th century was the center of the migration of German-speaking population of the Danube Swabians — the river in South-Eastern Europe. Involved vacant in the military actions of the German lands, the merchants, the peasants, the workers were massively moved to the territory of Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia.
For 300 years since the beginning of mass migration history of the Danube Swabians has known periods of prosperity and attempts of destruction, displacement and repression. 27 expositions of the Museum dedicated to the life and political situation of the Swabians in different countries and time periods. A small Museum staff has done a great job in search of historical documents and artifacts that characterize the life of a once-millionth of the German community and virtually destroyed as a result of repression after the Second world war. Co-existing with the different Nations they took over the life and customs of the local population, providing in turn an indisputable impact on the development and industrialization of these lands.
The centerpiece of the Museum is a kind of symbol of the Danube Swabians — Ulm boat house on the water in which they began their journey into a new life.
The Museum of the Danube Swabians in Ulm became not only a place of storage and the study of the history of this nation, but also a venue for various ethno-festivals, scientific conferences and exhibitions.
