Ethnological Museum – the largest ethnographic and anthropological Museum in Austria. Located in one of the parts of the former Imperial residence of the Hofburg. The Museum was founded in 1876: it then came the ethnological Department of the Museum of natural history. The first exhibits were brought even earlier, in the first decade of the 19th century. Many travelers and explorers helped to assemble a collection. Museum archives quickly replenished, so in 1928 the Ethnological Museum began to operate autonomously from the Museum of natural history. So, now the Museum has about 250 thousand of exhibits from all corners of the earth: Asia, Oceania, Africa.

The exposition of the Museum is to help visitors learn about the development of humanity on earth, about the similarities and differences of cultures and traditions of different Nations, to get acquainted with the peculiarities of everyday life and traditional crafts. The Museum is proud of its valuable exhibits. For example, the crown of the leader of the Aztecs, made of feathers of different birds, a collection of James cook. In addition, of great interest are bronze ware, vintage textiles, findings from the region of the Amazon and much more.

Oriental collection presents ancient Japanese masks, which date back to the 8th century. They were brought Franz Ferdinand, travelling in the East in the 19th century. Great contribution to the Museum collection was made by Baron von hügel, who was an ardent researcher and fan of South-East Asia. Thanks to the Baron at the Museum appeared Indian jewelry, weapons, and various religious artifacts.

The Museum has a nice gift shop where you can buy high-quality copies of the most interesting and famous exhibits of the Museum.
