In 2001 in Vienna opened a huge modern art complex Museum Quarter, located in a renovated building of the Royal stables. In the 1980s, the building has undergone substantial alteration under the leadership of Lorida and Manfred Ortner.
Here are the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Leopold Museum and the Museum of modern art Ludwig Foundation. The Leopold Museum houses the collection of modern Austrian art. It has about 5000 paintings of artists such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Ferdinand Waldmuller, Friedrich Gauermann. The collection was assembled over several decades by the Vienna Professor Rudolf Leopold.
The Museum of modern art Ludwig Foundation represents one of the largest contemporary art galleries in Central Europe: from American pop art and cubism to expressionism and "Viennese actionism".
On the territory of the Museum complex is also a Dance-a-quarter – international center of dance art, the architecture center, center for ecology, architectural Museum, tobacco Museum, children's Museum, as well as "21st quarter that can accommodate a large number of alternative artistic directions, and more. It hosts festivals such as the Vienna festival week and the annual summer festival, the famous Vienna film festival and the festival of dance.
