The Museum of modern art in the Galician town of Vigo was opened on 13 November 2002. Located in the heart of the city, the Museum occupies the building of the former court and prison. The building itself was built in the 19th century by the architect josé maría Ortiz and Sanchez. Originally it was planned to organize a prison, but subsequently, in addition to the prison cells, there is also courtrooms and rooms for guards. Exactly a century later, the city authorities decided to demolish this building and to organize an area surrounded by trees, but after the violent protest of a group of architects and Professor of art history, the building was recognized as a cultural heritage.
