From Lithuanian name of the gate of dawn translated as "gate of dawn". This gate is considered one of the main attractions and the symbol of the city of Vilnius. In the chapel are the most famous throughout Lithuania and abroad, Shrine Catholic religion. In addition, the gate was one of five first gate in Vilnius, which had been erected together with so famous and all recognizable city wall. In the height of the gate is comparable to a three-storey house located in the South of the Old city, and then joined with one of the longest and now preserved parts of the defence wall.
Gate Ausros previously called Medical gate and was built in 1522, at the intersection with one of the main trade routes, which had their origin in Vilnius, then passed through a village that time, next, following in Minsk, then in Smolensk and Moscow. In the chapel of the gate of dawn is the image of the great Merciful Mother, who is well known to all Catholics worldwide. Later, the image of the virgin Mary was bordered in a Golden cover, but the master performing the work in the 17th century, remained unknown.
Gates are the most typical Renaissance building. The main facade of the gate is decorated with griffins that guard the symbols of state power of the Lithuanian Grand Duchy. Above the bell tower is a frieze carved with the inscription "Mater Misercordia", which means "grieving mother". A long time ago in front of the gate was located in a ditch with water, and above it towered the drawbridge. The most beautiful view of the gate opens on the East side of the facade, in the chapel, after all, you can consider the longest side of the city wall.
As you know, the tradition on the creation of the chapel, located above the town gates, you notice and observe that a considerable number of cultures. In the chapels are the icons that were supposed to protect and defend the city from invading enemies, and to bless all those who enter or leave the city.
Near the gate is the Church of St. Teresa, Carmelite monks in 1671 built in the upper part of the chapel the chapel. It found shelter so highly venerated by all believers the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, made by an unknown artist in the early 17th century.
You can often find a second name of the icon – Vilnius Madonna. Even today, the chapel always gathers a huge number of people who are so eager to see the miraculous icon, as well as to cure various and all kinds of diseases. During the visit of John Paul II to Lithuania, in September 1993, from the Windows of the chapel, he appealed to all believers.
In addition, the feast of the Mother of God is considered not only one of the most important and revered, but also the most beautiful and memorable religious holiday celebrated in Vilnius in the third week of November.
