Dragalevtsi monastery is a functioning female Orthodox monastery, located three kilometers from the capital of Bulgaria, city of Sofia, at the foot of Vitosha mountain. The main festival of the monastery is the feast of the assumption.
The monastery was founded by Tsar of Bulgaria John Alexander in 1345. During the Ottoman rule was not destroyed, however some time was empty. In XV-XVII centuries, as part of the so-called "Saint Sophia Holy mountain", was a cultural and educational center of the country. In the nineteenth century Dragalevtsi monastery, took part in the national liberation struggle against Ottoman invaders. Father Gennady, which at that time was Abbot of the monastery, was a colleague and collaborator of the famous Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levski.
In 1476 near the main building of the Cathedral was built the monastery Church (katholikon) – Church of our lady of Vitoshka. The building is a two-aisled Basilica, decorated with numerous frescoes. At the end of the XVIII century, it has set the gold-plated carved iconostasis made of wood, of great artistic value. In 1932 the Church was built another Church.
In the first half of the twentieth century there was built several cell blocks for a large number of nuns, but to date there are only two novices, three nuns and a mother superior.
