Cherepashki the Dormition Abbey is a monastery that is located within the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church of Bulgaria, and one of the most famous monasteries in Bulgaria. It is located about 30 km from Vratsa, on the shore of the Iskar river and at the foot of the mighty cliffs, in which are carved many caves. Is a cultural monument of national importance.
The monastery was founded during the reign of Ivan Shishman – in the XIV century. According to the legend, the name of the monastery is connected with the location here of the many bones of soldiers killed under the command of Tsar Shishman during one of the bloody battles against the Turks.
The monastery was restored in the late sixteenth century Bulgarian painters, scribes, and a Builder of churches Pimen:. He turned the monastery into the center, where as a book focused and spiritual activity. Here in 1612, was created by legendary Cherepishskoe the four Gospels in a silver robe. Active work aimed at the creation of Church literature continued in the monastery until the XVIII century.
Two-storey ossuary was built in 1784 straight into cliffs above the monastery. Chapel ossuary dedicated to St. John The Baptist.
Over the centuries of Turkish rule the monastery was repeatedly burned, but each time he patiently rebuilt. Violent raids of circula after the Russian war with the Turks (between 1787 and years 1891) forced the monks to leave the monastery, but by 1802, he again became active.
In the period from 1950 to 1990 cherepashki the monastery served as a premise for Sophia Seminary, as a number of buildings and adjacent territories was confiscated by the authorities.
