Lidzbark Warmiński is a Polish city, founded in 1240 and the Teutonic knights. In 1241 the city was built the first wooden castle of the knights, and ten years later, in the castle settled first Bishop of the diocese of Warmia Anselm.

From the mid fourteenth century to the nineteenth century Lidzbark Warmiński was the capital of Warmia and largest city of the region. He, also, was the center of faith and culture in the Commonwealth and was named the Pearl of Warmia. For several centuries, the city was considered one of the major economic centers. In 1309 Lidzbark Warmiński urban, and six years later was consecrated a wooden Church. The construction of the stone castle was completed in the fourteenth century. A simple building in the shape of a square was well protected from enemies on all sides. The main entrance to the castle was located on the South side and led into a square courtyard, protected by two-story arched galleries. Here was concentrated the whole administration of the bishopric, was held a court session, flourished diplomatic school.

After the First partition of Polish lands in 1772, the town was part of Prussia. The bishops have lost their powers, the country was divided into districts, the castle was placed a Prussian garrison. Lidzbark Warmiński slowly began to lose its dominant position. In June 1807 in the city took place the battle between the Russians and Prussians against the French.

From 1933 to 1945 Lidzbark Warmiński was the center of a large German government radio station. The city was badly damaged after its conquest by the red Army in 1945. Within the territorial changes promulgated at the Potsdam conference, the area was annexed to Poland, and the ethnic German population expelled.

In 1961 in the Episcopal castle Museum was opened, where you can get acquainted with the art exhibit of outstanding Polish artists. In addition, at the exhibition you can see the furniture and decor elements.

In addition to the castle interest to tourists is the former Evangelical Church - the most outstanding example of Protestant architecture of Warmia built between the years 1818-1823 by order of Friedrich Wilhelm III. In the Old town preserves the High gate – Gothic building, built in the mid fifteenth century.
