Monument to those killed and tortured in the East is a monument that stands on Buranovskoy street in Warsaw.
The monument was designed by Polish sculptor Named Maximilian is a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of fine arts. Monument to those killed and tortured in the East was opened on 17 September 1995 in the 56-th anniversary of the aggression of the Soviet Union against Poland. The monument was created in the memory of poles murdered in the labor camps of Siberia, as well as the victims of Katyn, who died in 1940 during mass shootings. According to the archives, March 5, 1940, was shot 21857 Polish citizens.
The monument with a height of almost seven metres depicts a railway carriage without walls, in which a large number of crosses. Each sleeper is made stamps with the names of the settlements were located where labor camps, or were committed the mass murder of Polish citizens.
Care of the monument took over the Federation of Katyn families. In 1999 the monument was a prayer by BL. John Paul II during his visit to Warsaw. In 2006 it was visited by Pope Benedict XVI during his pilgrimage to Poland.
