Yokohama is one of the most modern cities in the Country of the rising Sun, but it is possible to find a place where you can feel the spirit of old Japan. This Sankeien - large garden in traditional Japanese style, which is a national monument of culture.
The garden is located in the district Honmoku and covers an area of 180 thousand square meters. Sankeien consists of two parts – external and internal garden. Internal was once the private grounds of the family of a successful silk merchant Sankey tank'hara, who founded the Park in the early nineteenth century. The inner garden was opened to visitors only in 1958.
Businessman Sankey tank'hara was a great lover of the beautiful, in particular, architecture and painting. This is evidenced by the paintings presented in the small gallery in the Park, some of them were painted by the entrepreneur. Also an interesting collection of buildings that Sankey tank'hara literally moved from different cities and provinces of Japan – from Kyoto, Gifu, Wakayama and others. To move a building from one place to another is not considered impossible, as the buildings were often made of wood.
Altogether, Sankeien there are 17 buildings and buildings of cultural and historical value. So, on top of the hill is a pagoda in three tiers, which is visible from any point of the garden – it was built in the mid-fifteenth century. By the end of the same century dates the building of the temple of Tomazi moved from Kyoto. Other buildings belonged to the temple of Tokaji (kamakura) and was built in 1634. In the middle of XVII century was built the house of Rinconcito in which lived an aristocratic family branch of the Kishu Tokugawa clan. The silk merchant was able to move even the Imperial Palace of Katsura-Rikyu, and the building of the temple complex of Daitokuji, which in 1951 was built by order of the ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi in gratitude for the recovery of the mother.
Historical monument is the home of a wealthy farmer, who lived in Gifu. The environment in which in the XIX century there lived a family of Ankara can now be viewed by everyone.
The buildings located in the Park, harmonize with surrounding plants. They were chosen so that in each season Sankeien entertained the guests with blooms and bright colors. Summer in the garden are blooming irises, and winter plum. Spring Sakura blossoms, and in autumn red maple leaves.
