The city Museum of Zagreb was founded in 1907. On the ninetieth year of its existence, in 1997, the Museum had opened the sixth permanent exhibition, which was first held in the restored and appropriate location, with the use of modern technology. The exhibition presents the history of the city of Zagreb from prehistory, traces of which were recently discovered under the building of the Museum, until today.

The building, which now houses the Museum was once the monastery of the poor Clares (1650), and in itself is a historical monument of great importance. During the repair of the premises (1989-1997) archaeologists conducted additional excavations that brought new information. Therefore, the permanent exhibition begins with the interpretation of archaeological findings, which are presented in the very place where they were found. The Museum presents prehistoric settlements built in the 7th century BC, i.e. in the epoch of the early Iron age, as well as home and Studio culture of the late Iron age.
The Museum presents forty-five topics in an interesting, consistent and documented manner. Each period is illustrated a characteristic objects that gives the visitor a vivid portrait of Zagreb, starting with the legends about the origin of the city name, telling about the life of Medieval Gradec, various symbols of the city, and ending with the story of the Church. The Museum was restored shops and storefronts in Ilıca, recreating the feeling of the daily life of this most important shopping street of the 19th century. Special attention is given to the urban planning program "Green horseshoe" with models of the most important buildings, taken from the plan of Zagreb, creating a typical atmosphere of the period in the late 19th century.
