The Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, who reigned in the period from 1556 to 1605 year, is considered one of the most famous and respected Muslim rulers of India. So his tomb, though in General, and performed in a rather moderate Spartan style, but still very luxury is in the details. The construction of the mausoleum of Akbar, according to tradition, began during his life. The location for the tomb was personally chosen by the Emperor. After the ruler's death in 1605, his son Jahangir kept building, and it was completed in 1613.

The tomb is located in the small village Sikandra, in the suburbs of Agra and is a masterpiece of Muslim architecture. It is a complex of two buildings, one of which is the mausoleum itself, and another huge gate. Connects them to a wide paved road. Gate Buland-Darwaza, or, as they are called, Gates of Splendor, are the main entrance to the mausoleum. They are decorated with white marble minarets, located on the four corners of the gate. The mausoleum is made of the traditional buildings of the time red Sandstone and fairly new finishing material – marble, in the form of four-sided pyramid. It is divided into several tiers, the top is constructed of marble, and contains four pointed towers. And in the middle of the building is an open courtyard in the center of which is placed a special "tourist version" of the Imperial tomb, decorated with intricate ornaments and inscriptions. While the true burial place of Akbar is located in the catacombs. And the gate and the mausoleum lined with colorful tiles, which develops into a beautiful and intricate patterns.

The area around the tomb is home to many monkeys, which can be quite aggressive and even attack the tourists.
