The fortress of al-Jahili is one of the main historical and architectural attractions in the UAE. It is located in the centre of al ain amidst a well-tended and green Park.
This large fortress was built in 1898 by order of the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan. It was a powerful military fortress that protected the city and valuable palm groves, and also served as a refuge for local residents during the brutal inter-tribal bickering. Besides, there was the residence of the local Governor.
Because the building is not very old, and exterior walls of the premises in its territory it has perfectly preserved its historical appearance. Originally, the castle had a slightly different view. At the end of XIX century it consisted of two buildings: a round watchtower and a small square Fort. Today, both facilities are open to the public. Inside the fortress of al-Jahili can see the Old Fort is a small square courtyard surrounded by a six-meter-high walls.
Walls made of earth blocks laid directly on the sand without the use of Foundation. Doors and Windows for the castle was made of a small amount of wood, and walls made of local clay. The ceiling of the fortress of al-Jahili was made from the palm rafters. As for the floors, they were made of rammed earth, with the addition of wax to increase durability.
Today al-Jahili is a historical architectural monument, located among the green lawns and beautiful trees. Most of the fortress is occupied by the exposition of Mumbra Ibn London", which is a unique photos taken in the mid-twentieth century British Explorer and traveler Sir Wilfrid Teshera in the Arabian desert.
