The Castle Of San Fernando Photo: The Castle Of San Fernando

The castle of San Fernando is a fortress, built almost in the center of Alicante, on mount Tossal during the war of independence against the Napoleonic army, in the period between 1809 and 1813 for years. This castle for some time was used as a prison, its purpose was to provide protection to a more ancient castle – the castle of Saint Barbara. Its name, the castle was in honor of the king of Spain Fernando VII.

The construction of the castle was carried out under the direction of the military engineer Pablo Ordovas Sastre. Its defensive role in the war against the French castle was never completed due to the fact that the French broke their offensive in the direction of Alicante, concentrating all their forces in the military campaign against Russia.

The Foundation of the fortress are two bastions connected by walls-transitions, providing free movement inside the fortress and its defenders. At the foot of the fortress dug a deep ditch, inside the fortress is a large bunker, providing if necessary a shelter from enemy fire. Also on the territory of the fortress are gunpowder warehouse, warehouses for storage of weapons, provisions, water tanks.

For a long time the fortress of San Fernando was in poor condition, causing dissatisfaction of the local population. At the moment the castle was restored, and nearby, on the slopes of the mountains, organized a huge Park with many sports and entertainment venues.
