Dam square – Central square of Amsterdam, the capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the venue of various official events and celebrations and popular tourist attraction. Every year on 4 may here celebrated the national day of remembrance, here are the celebrations on the occasion of the king, here the townspeople celebrate Christmas.

Dam square is located in the historical centre of Amsterdam. The size of the area is approximately 200 x 100 meters. Its name, like the name of the city comes from the word "dam". This dam appeared on the Amstel river in 1270 and joined the two parts of the city, lying on different sides of the river. Over time, the dam was enlarged and strengthened and turned into a Central area, connecting two existing urban area. Where boats arrived, there was a fish market, and on the other side of the square was the town hall. Ladies long been a market square, and until 1808 there was a city of the Weighing chamber. While there was exchange, later in its place appeared a General store. In the early nineteenth century was filled with the last water station, and the area became surrounded on all sides by land.

Now the Dam square is crossed by several tram lines. From her depart the main streets of the Dutch capital: Damrak, Rokin, Newenden, the Kalverstraat and here there are not. On the West side of the square is the Royal Palace, next to the old New Church and the wax Museum Madame Tussauds. On the opposite side of the square in 1956, was established the national monument – white stele, erected in memory of the victims of the Second world war.
