Allard Pierson, whose name is the Museum, he taught at the University classical archaeology. His love of arheologie was expressed, in particular, in the expeditions to the Mediterranean, from where he brought a lot of amazing things. In the basis of the Museum collection of antique objects of art collected by a colleague of Pearson, Jan Six. After the death of six, son of Pearson, Jan Lodewijk, purchased his collection. The Museum was officially opened in 1934. Then he placed all on one floor, but soon the premises was not enough, since the Museum funds were growing. The Museum not only bought the exhibits, but took the gift.
The building in which the Museum is located now, was opened in 1976 by Queen Beatrix. Previously it housed the Bank of the Netherlands.
In the section devoted to Ancient Egypt, visitors can see the mummies and sarcophagi and see a documentary film, which tells in detail about how he made such burial sites.
